The UNSW Business AI Lab followed a comprehensive three-pronged process to identify the competitive opportunity and strategic risks facing Roche.
Ecosystem, Technology and Adoption Analysis
The UNSW Business AI Lab conducted an extensive stakeholder analysis across the product ecosystem to provide actionable insights into the existing challenges faced by end users and opportunities for AI, and barrier to adoption.
Following a Business AI-specific empirical research analysis, the UNSW Business AI Lab designed a research program to understand how AI would impact the outcomes and fit into existing processes used by stakeholders.
The lab conducted an ethical review of the study, then conducted in-depth interviews of a large cohort of stakeholders including leaders, professionals, managers, customers, and technicians. The semi-structured interviews were performed by our team of expert researchers and were recorded for qualitative analysis. The qualitative analysis identified common themes, key insights and trends, and were interpreted from a perspective of AI adoption.
This qualitative analysis provided management new insights into the barriers faced by their customers and staff: barriers that AI has the potential to improve, and barriers that emerging competitors may have the potential to exploit.
Competitive Analysis

The lab followed a systematic method to:
- Identify potential competitors
- Assessment of strengths and weaknesses of competitors' offerings
- Evaluate competitors' strategy and capabilities
- Analyse overall competitive landscape
- Identify potential gaps and opportunities in the competitive landscape
This analysis highlighted emerging competitors and market opportunities for management.
Technology, Innovation and Impact Analysis
Following the understanding of stakeholder needs and competitive landscape, the UNSW Business AI Lab analysed the opportunity and risks of adopting AI technology.
